Meet The Artist: Monte Baker
Monte Baker grew up in the small historic town of Dubois, Wyoming, nestled in the Wind River Valley on the southern end of Yellowstone National Park. Monte attended school in Dubois, receiving his first art class from famed Mary and Joe Back. Later, however, he pursued a college education at Ricks College and Utah State University, graduating in 1987 with degrees in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Math and German.
With a father in forestry, the family made frequent trips through the mountains, hiking, camping, studying and collecting artifacts, and packing home antlers. Monte started carving antler in junior high after seeing belt buckles made from the antler rosette. Thirty years have past since those first carvings. He still uses dental drills, but fortunately, today’s are better. The art has developed over the years into a dramatic and popular work.
As a professional artist, Monte has sent his carvings to collectors in many countries, and throughout North America. He now owns his own gallery in Dubois and offers visitors a great adventure in art.
